We regularly receive questions about how long certain foods last in beeswax wraps and bags. We have prepared for you an overview of the most frequently packaged foods.
The shelf life of food in beeswax wraps and bags depends on the type of food and storage conditions. In general, dry foods such as biscuits, coffee, or cereals can be stored in beeswax wraps and bags for several months without deterioration. Moist foods like cheeses, fruits, and vegetables have an extended shelf life of several days to weeks compared to those left on the counter/in the fridge. Bee wax has conservative, antibacterial, and antifungal properties.
Let's take a look at how long specific foods can last:
Vegetables
- lettuce - 1 week
- radish - 2 weeks
- cucumber - 2 weeks
- half an onion - 1 week
- zucchini - 3 weeks
- carrot - 3 weeks
- eggplant - 2 weeks
- pepper - 2 weeks
Fruits
- half an avocado - 3 days
- half a lemon - 2 weeks
- half an apple - 4 days
- bananas - a wax bag extends the shelf life by 3 days
Cheeses
- parmesan - already has a long shelf life from production, beeswax wrap protects it from fridge odors and from hardening
- emmental - 2 weeks
Bread and pastries
- bread - 5 days, bread needs more air. Open the bag every day when you're having something tasty to let the bread breathe, then close it again.
- croissants - 3 days
- baked pastries - we do not recommend wrapping. Bread baked from frozen semi-finished products or bread baked from poor-quality ingredients is not suitable for wrapping as it molds quickly
